Broncos Losing Grip On Top-5

The Broncos (6-0) have been on a steady slide over the last three weeks, from No. 1 down to No. 5 in our Week 6 rankings.

The stumble began after the Broncos Week 4, 23-20 win over the Vikings (3-2), a game in which the BES actually found the Vikings to be the more competitive team and raised them from No. 11 to No. 9.

Since then the Broncos have made a couple of narrow escapes with the latest being a 23-20 overtime victory on the road against the Browns (2-4) in Week 6. That effort left them with a BES Overall of 3.06 which ties the 4-1 Jets ranked No. 6

The Broncos defense had been No. 1 in BES Defense since our initial Week 2 rankings but was supplanted by the Jets defense for first place. That decline can be attributed to the increasing burden of the Broncos woeful offensive unit, currently ranked 29th in BES Offense.

A portion of the blame belongs to Broncos Quarterback Peyton Manning who has been uncharacteristically abysmal as a passer, registering sub-70.0 passer ratings in four of six outings thus far. He has completed a career-low 61.6 percent of his throws for just seven touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

Meanwhile, the offense as a unit ranks 30th in third down conversion rate (30.0%), 30th in rushing yards per game (85.0), 31st in yards per play (5.1) and 29th in total yards per game (325.8).

We previously predicted the Broncos defense would likely keep them undefeated through Weeks 3-6. Nonetheless, the Packers (No. 4) await on the other side of a Week 7 bye for both teams. The Broncos would be wise to spend that time diagnosing and eradicating whatever ails their offensive scheme.

  1. Of course they are going lose. I think they will lose by 3 tds

  2. Paid-a-ton Manning is fading. One of the greatest signal callers to play the game but old age has crept up on him. How long can the D continue to save the Broncos…especially against the elite teams they have coming up? I see another one-and-done playoff appearance in their future.

  3. It would be Bronco offense caving in putting too much pressure on Denver defense making Rodgers day another day at the office when Packers intercept Manning.

  4. Bronco ‘ s will get beaten by The Pack. –Kemberly
