Chiefs Defense Rises After Dominating Lions

The Chiefs (3-5) kept their dwindling playoff hopes alive by overwhelming the Lions (1-7) in a 45-10 overseas thrashing in Week 8. In our Week 7 rankings, the Chiefs were 31st with a BES Overall score of 1.89 while the Lions were 28th with a score of 2.05. However, a closer look at how the two teams matched up lends clarity to why the Chiefs were so dominant in this contest.

Arguably, the most impactful numbers were those regarding turnovers. The Lions Ball Security score of 1.55 versus the Chiefs Takeaways score of 2.68 was a definite factor in the game. The Chiefs registered two interceptions in the second quarter resulting in a combined 10 points, stretching their lead to 24-3 before halftime.

The big lead forced the Lions into becoming one-dimensional on offense as they attempted to mount a comeback. This fed into a voracious Chiefs defense that compiled eight of its 14 quarterback hits in the second half. The Chiefs also allowed the Lions to convert just two out of 12 third down attempts for a conversion rate of just 16.7 percent.

Overall, this was the Chiefs most complete game since their Week 1 win over the Texans (No. 24). As a result, the Chiefs BES Overall score rose from 1.89 to 2.09, an impressive .20 increase. Even more impressive was their BES Defense score leaping from 2.26 to 2.53 which should place them among the Top-15 units in BES Defense after we have processed all the numbers from Week 8.

  1. I think it’s a crazy thought but if we can start playing like we expected this team would perform we have half the season to pull off a wild card.
