Extension Brings Crabtree Full Circle With Raiders

The Raiders (5-7) inked receiver Michael Crabtree to a four-year, $35 million extension on Wednesday per NFL.com .

The 28-year-old Crabtree, now in his seventh season, leads the Raiders in receptions (66) and touchdowns (7). He is also second in receiving yards (760) to rookie sensation Amari Cooper (920).

As a tandem, the two provide second-year quarterback Derek Carr with a pair of reliable and explosive targets on the perimeter of the Raiders offense.

NFL draft enthusiasts may recall the 2009 draft when Crabtree, a highly regarded  and accomplished prospect out of Texas Tech, was widely predicted to be the first receiver selected.

In fact, Crabtree was considered by many as a lock to be the Raiders seventh overall selection. Instead, the Raiders chose Darius Heyward-Bey, a speedy receiver out of Maryland. Crabtree then fell to the 10th overall slot where he was selected by the 49ers.

That same year, Crabtree held out, missing all of 49ers training camp, preseason and the first four games of the regular season before signing a six-year, $32 million deal with $17 million in guaranteed money.

The basis for Crabtree’s holdout was he felt he should’ve been drafted earlier considering he was the consensus No. 1 receiver prospect in the draft and should be compensated accordingly.

Fast forward to 2015 where Crabtree has just secured his short term future with the team he felt should have chosen him seven years ago.
